“In” Meeting Style
by Kim Condon

Short skirts or long skirts.  Heels or flats. What’s in or out isn’t limited to what we wear. Behavior is a forerunner in lasting impressions and meetings are quickly becoming the place to make or break a relationship.  In a recent survey, 34% of the respondents reported they felt formal meetings were ineffective due to a range of unnecessary interruptions and behaviors.

You can leave them “wowed” at your next meeting with these fashionable precepts.
  • Don’t be late. In fact, arrive a few minutes early.  Pick a good spot and make it your own by arranging your “stuff” to your liking. You’ll feel more organized and be able to concentrate more readily on the meeting topic.

  • Turn your cell phone to vibrate or turn it completely off. If your cell phone does go off, quietly step out of the room before you answer the call.  If you are expecting calls, sit next to the door for an easy exit.

  • Set up your computer and equipment prior to the meeting. Even if your laptop is wireless, have it ready on the table before the meeting starts.

  • Don’t read and respond to e-mail or do other work during the meeting.

  • If you are uncomfortable or find yourself drifting off, stand up next time it’s your turn to speak.  Simply standing or walking to a marker board can visually enhance your statements.

  • If you are the meeting sponsor, arrive early and arrange the seating to the number of people attending. Move extra chairs to the back of the room and set-up all equipment and presentation materials. Arrange any mobile boards so they are at the edge of the group - but within an easy reach. For enhanced dialogue, make sure everyone has a clear view of you and all other team members.
