Design Creep
Something we wish we saw more of? Quality design in unusual places, e.g., the Japanese have a practice of incorporating soothing design and architectural aesthetics in dentist office design to benefit patients. A striking example is an orthodontist clinic in Minami-Nagano, Japan, by architect Hiroki Tanabe and designer Sin Yokoo, which was built with huge windows so patients could enjoy spectacular vista views of the paddy fields, peach orchards and mountains that surround the clinic. Perhaps not as grand, but equally creative, are these two design offerings: elevator wall designs, bold prints installed in elevators (something to look at besides the floor buttons!) from KONE Deco and Marimekko; and tapedeck.org, an online gallery to “showcase the amazing beauty and sometimes weirdness found in the designs of the common audio tape cassette.”
