Welcome to 360 e-zine

Pam Brenner, Cub Reporter
As I write this first welcome letter I cannot help but reflect on my brief history in the newspaper business.  Nothing flashy – or anything that would show up on a resume – but it indicates how personal interests often culminate into new opportunities later in life.

Bear with me …

Remember when you were too young for a “real” job and wanted to make some cash? In our neighborhood we washed cars, held a carnival and even created our own newspaper. I remember sitting in our basement writing articles, drawing cartoons, and creating ads.  Then a few of us (always power in numbers) would sell our newspapers door-to-door. Later, while in high school, I worked on the school newspaper in various capacities. Then, a bunch of us would hand out the newspapers during our lunch hour.

Many years later (after a few college degrees and a lifetime of experiences) I began my career at Steelcase. I have primarily worked in the area of the business called “knowledge” – in effect publishing articles and providing content (for speeches, advertising, surveys, media interviews etc.) on the importance of the workplace in our daily lives.  Now, I have the responsibillity of publishing the new Steelcase e-zine called 360. It’s called 360 because we plan to take a broad view, a 360-degree view, of what’s happening in the workplace.

Pretty cool.

In each issue we’ll focus on the how, when, where and why of work. We’ll cover the work environment and provide tips, examples and insight that should cause you to reflect on the role of work in your life – and hopefully make it better. In this first issue you’ll read about how Steelcase and IBM explored the future of the workplace in a prototype called BlueSpace. You’ll also read how workplace security has evolved from access badges and video cameras to something you’d see in a high-tech spy movie. In the article called “What Color is Your Workspace,” Jean Gorman (Nayar) uncovers the role of color and texture and “Lessons in Learning” she explores foundational and forward thinking about learning and the role of the environment.

“Too busy.” “Give it to me quick.” If this sounds like you then take a peek at the “90 Second” column. It contains quick hits, tips and information for the person on the go. It’s only one page and will only take 90 seconds to read … promise.  Also, be sure to check out the section called “Stuff” that showcases a few of our products and provides the connection between our knowledge of the workplace and the products we sell. (After all, we have to pay the bills.)

I hope you enjoy the 360 e-zine. If you have ideas for future articles please send a note to
editor@360steelcase.com Oh, by the way, no need to distribute this pub (as we say in the biz) in the lunchroom or door-to-door, simply send it (electronically) to your friends.

Thanks,
Pam Brenner, Steelcase
Editor, 360 e-zine
